Maria (pronounced Mariah) Elizabeth Harnish was my great grandmother. She was born April 19, 1841 in Lancaster, PA and died February 7, 1898 in Covina, CA. She was the daughter of Michael Kendig Harnish and Ann Graeff. Both of her parents were also born in Lancaster, PA and were of German descent. She was the third of five children.
Maria married Samuel Ashton Overholtzer November 4, 1858 at Mt. Carroll, IL. Samuel and Maria had 13 children. Their first child, John Ezra was born in Mt. Carroll, IL on January 29, 1860 and only lived a few weeks dying on March 5, 1860.
This is my great grandfather, Samuel Ashton Overholtzer, the son of Jacob A Overholtzer and Catherine Anglemire, both of German descent. He was born March 3, 1837 in Lancaster, PA and died on April 14, 1900 in Covina, CA. The Overholtzers/Oberholters were a multi-generational family that practiced the Church of the Brethren faith that was a derivative of the Mennonites. Many Overholtzers were deeply involved in the church and in education. My great grandfather’s family were mostly farmers.
